Harvard Business Review Press is releasing a new enhanced edition of Blue Ocean Strategy, the influential strategy book by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne, on August 18, 2026.
Originally published two decades ago, Blue Ocean Strategy has become one of the most widely recognized strategy books, selling more than four million copies and being published in 49 languages.
The book introduced a powerful strategic idea: instead of competing harder in crowded existing markets — “red oceans” — companies can create new market spaces, or “blue oceans,” where competition becomes less relevant.
Rather than simply republishing the original framework, the new 368-page edition updates Blue Ocean Strategy for today's strategic environment.
The authors have added a new preface examining the continuing relevance of Blue Ocean Strategy in the age of artificial intelligence.
More importantly, the book introduces two major contemporary case studies.
The first examines NVIDIA and how the company created successive new market opportunities across semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
The case explores NVIDIA through the lens of market creation: not simply outperforming competitors within an established market, but repeatedly expanding into new strategic spaces.
Perhaps more unexpectedly, the second major case focuses on Taylor Swift.
Kim and Mauborgne analyze how Swift differentiated herself within the intensely competitive music industry while progressively expanding her position into the broader entertainment business.
It is an interesting reminder that Blue Ocean Strategy isn't limited to traditional corporate strategy. Its principles can also be applied to brands, creators and industries where differentiation and audience creation play a central role.
The Enhanced Edition also provides a curated collection of more than 50 Blue Ocean Strategy cases spanning different industries and geographies.
The objective is to demonstrate how the principles of market creation and value innovation can be applied far beyond the classic examples associated with the original book.
The timing is particularly interesting.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly making many capabilities cheaper, faster and more accessible. As competitors gain access to similar technologies, simply possessing AI capabilities may become less differentiating.
The strategic question increasingly becomes not “Do we use AI?”, but “What new value and market opportunities can we create with it?”
Twenty years after its original publication, that makes the central question behind Blue Ocean Strategy surprisingly contemporary:
Instead of trying to win the existing game, can you create a different one?
